VersaCold is excited to announce that our Transportation Management & 4PL solutions is now SmartWay certified. We are joining more than 3,000 companies across North America that have signed on to reduce fuel use and emissions, improve efficiencies and encourage best practices in their freight supply chains. The SmartWay program provides VersaCold with another tool to demonstrate efficiencies and showcase continuous efforts to improve as we build on best practices. While 4PL is the first of our solutions to become SmartWay certified, it will not be the last as we take steps to certify our other transportation-related solutions.

What is the SmartWay Transport Partnership?

The SmartWay Transport Partnership started as an initiative launched in 2004 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and has been administered in Canada by Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) since 2012. This partnership is designed to be a collaboration between government and business to help reduce the fuel costs of transporting goods in the cleanest and most efficient way possible. SmartWay works with partnering shippers and freight carriers to track their fuel consumption, improve their annual performance and benchmark their operations.

The process for becoming SmartWay certified is time intensive and thorough. This certification requires VersaCold 4PL solution to have in-depth knowledge of their carriers and to be capable of answering a variety of questions about their operations. However, the work doesn’t just stop there. VersaCold 4PL also performs their own internal checks and verifications. While it’s not required that each carrier VersaCold works with is SmartWay certified, it is necessary to verify important information such as service levels offered, how much weight they provide, and how many miles a carrier drives annually. This level of due diligence allows us to assure our clients that we are providing them with the most accurate and up-to-date information possible.

Being SmartWay certified is not only good for the environment but also great for companies

In today’s world where global warming and sustainability are on the top of many people’s minds, it’s important that logistics companies take the necessary steps to address the growing demand to reduce their carbon footprint where possible and improve overall environmental performance. Large businesses have sustainability quotas they are trying to reach, and smaller companies are increasingly asking for more to be done in this area as well. SmartWay certification allows VersaCold to provide reliable and credible government backed data to help clients meet these challenges.

The program also serves as a great tool to help the Canadian government report their environmental impact to other countries as part of international initiatives to stop climate change. No matter the size of their business, we see SmartWay certification as a great added value for our customers as the Canadian government makes significant pushes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by incentivizing companies with tax benefits. Eventually, this program in the future could see companies being able to report emission reductions and use this as a tradable currency with other companies. This would be a great feature for any business that is already willing to do their part to help the environment and lessen their footprint.
